With the announcement by Pantone that Radiant Orchid will be the colour of the year and the appearance of gentle lavender washes at Holly Fulton and PPQ, it is safe to say that shades of purple will be quite popular throughout this season. In conjunction with the graphic liner trend that has been seen at Missoni and Anya Hindmarch, I have put together a brief tutorial for a fun and simple to wear eye look that uses a flash of vibrant violet on the lower lid to spice up a traditional cat eye! I hope you like it!
First, make sure that your eye lid is clean and primed. Then, using a soft, fluffy brush, apply a shade that is somewhere between a peach and a tan all over the lid. This will help balance out the colour and provide some definition to the crease.
Apply a kohl liner in a medium purple shade on the lower waterline, and then drag it down onto the lower lid. Because we will be layering eyeshadows on top of this, the colour of this foundation does not need to be a perfect match for the shade of purple that you are going for; but, it does create a base that will really help to intensify the overall appearance. Even though mine had some gold glitter, it won’t be very noticeable after everything is finished.
Applying a vivid blue/violet duochrome eyeshadow over the liner foundation with a firm pencil brush will ensure that the colour is distributed evenly and effectively. Although it may seem completely illogical right now, this strategy will be successful in the end.
Makeup artists recommend using a matte lilac eyeshadow and blending out the violet eyeshadow on the lower lid to create a look that is much more gentle and pleasing. While you are doing this, you may make a winged form by pulling out the colour at the outside corner to create a winged shape. This will tie in well with our winged liner.
You may create a bold winged liner on the lid of the container by using a liquid liner in a deep black colour. I opted for a liner that was very thick and noticeable, but you can make it as thin or thick as you want with this! To further lengthen the appearance of the eye, I drew the liner into a point at the innermost corner of the eye. You may finalise the appearance by applying many coats of mascara to both the top and lower lashes, and here is where you have the option to do so. This would be perfect for a night out with the ladies, and if you wanted to go all out, you could even coordinate the colour of your bottom lid with your purse or shoes.
Alternately, if you have short eyelashes like I do and you want a more dramatic appearance, you may add some graphic artificial lashes that have spikes on them. This is an easy way to include some colour into your makeup, and you can always modify the colour to fit your own personal preference; cobalt blue or lemony lime green will also carry you into the next season.
